The Journey starts long before the actual trip. There was a quick idea during my university year to volunteer in South Africa in animal conservation. With commitment and expectations, it sounded far and unachievable.
July 2024, the idea of volunteering in South Africa came to me again. This time with more insight. With steady income and a supportive work environment, I finally look into the possibility to achieve the dream. Google search on volunteer work in South Africa pop up many opportunities in different location and different field. One particular that caught my eye was a farm assistant in a stable.
Horses has always been something I love to learn about. The first horse I had interact with was in my studies time in the UK. I have a vague memory that this particular grey horse greeting everyone passing by her stable. Giving friendly sniff and cheeky head shake. Making us feel warm and welcoming. Since then, the idea of learning to ride a horse keeps coming to me.
8 January 2023, my first day at riding school. Nervous, I was greeted by my then coach. After a brief introduction about the horse, he led me into the arena and started the class. I remember my leg felt like jelly the moment I slide down from the horse after the class. That was my first lesson. Not much memory of the actual class. Still figuring what draws me to the mighty horse world. It took me a year to realise why horses is so addictive. It's the energy!
It's the calming and reassuring energy that tells you "I have you back, just do it!" That's what make me wanting to venture into horsemanship. Hoping to be a better rider that give the best environment and space for the horse to perform without stress.
Finally, in January 2025, I have booked my first volunteering trip to a farm in South Africa.
